Ode to the fish gods

The professor and I routinely burn a little incense and then flush a few rapalas down the toilet prior to our first trip out on Eagle Lake in respect of the fish gods. A few hundred years from now, archeologists will be puzzled by this find in the VBL sanitary system. However, it works for us. Please be warned however, that Gord advises removing the hooks prior to flushing.
Well, the Professor just informed me that he was off for a “spiritual retreat” and I asked him if he would share a fishing prayer during his time in Racine. The following are favorites of mine:

The Rapala Fishing Prayer:
“Oh Lord…There he is…It feels like a big one…Please don’t let me lose him…I’ve never caught one this big before. I’ll try not to horse him, and if I land him, I promise to release him…and make a graphite replica if my wife says it’s ok. Thank you for the Rapalas…Amen.”

The Sleepy Medicine Prayer
"Our lager, Which art in barrels, Hallowed be thy drink. Thy will be drunk, as a skunk, At home as it is in the pub. Give us this day our foamy head, And forgive us our spillage's, As we forgive those who spill against us. And lead us not into incarceration, But deliver us from hangovers. For thine is the Ale, The Pilsner and The lager. For ever and ever."

Any others?

Andy

  1. Hey!
What is the deal with taking the hooks off a good lure and flushing it? You're supposed to catch fish with it?
    Also, repeating the Rapala Advertisement?
Must be drinking a strange brew to find this amusing....

  2. Sir Charles,

These guys may be on to something. Personally, I always prefered fish catching to fishing. Give it a try....maybe you will finally catch that musky you have been dreaming about? Please tell me we won't see you fishing those hookless rapalas out of the sanitary system at VBL? It might anger the fish gods.

  3. Sir Charles,

You will have to ask the professor about the time he was fishing with hookless rapalas to avoid kills upon release.

  4. Charles seems to be mocking both brew and the Professor's religion. I think someone needs a little fishing time?

God give me strength to catch a fish,
    So big that even I,
    When telling of it afterwards,
    Have no need to lie.

  5. God grant that I may live to fish

    For another shining day,

But when my final cast is made

    I then most humbly pray,

When nestled in your landing net

    As I lay peacefully asleep,

You'll smile at me and judge

That I'm "big enough not to keep."

Oh, I think every successful lure needs a hook. Just like every bit of Comedy.

  7. Rapala®, the world’s foremost manufacturer of fishing lures and accessories, was presented with the International Game and Fish Association’s (IGFA) 2009 Lifetime Achievement Award on April 10, 2010 at IGFA headquarters in Dania Beach, Fla.

Rapala lures are responsible for more IGFA world records than any other lure manufacturer in history, holding world record catches on every continent except Antarctica. In fact, Rapala is the first and only lure manufacture to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award by the IGFA, proving how effective its lures are on a global basis. Essentially, all over the world, big fish are eating little fish that swim like a Rapala.

The Seventh Annual World Record Achievement Awards honor those individuals with outstanding angling achievements for 2009. Taken from this past year’s World Record Game Fishes book "Top Ten" list, awards were presented to men, women, juniors and fly anglers for the most world records set this past year. IGFA also recognized tackle manufacturers whose products have captured the most world records in 2009.

At the ceremony, Rapala also received the following awards:
    • 1st place for lures: 29 new world records caught on Rapala lures in 2009.
    • 2nd place for scales: 47 new world records weighed on Rapala scales in 2009.
    • 3rd place for line: 10 new world records caught on Sufix Line in 2009.

The IGFA Lifetime Achievement Award for Rapala presented to Tom Mackin, president of Rapala USA, was in the form of a granite circle hook sculpture custom-created by well known artist David Wirth.

  8. Hey! BIG A Lewis and Anonymous
You two really enjoy promoting Rapala.
I now understand you two must be Rapala Tackle Guru's.
    Good Luck with that...

  9. Charles,

Now there's a gig I could enjoy. Unfortunately, they are out of my league. I'm not out to promote anything for financial gain on this web site. I only wish the Bastables a profitable 2010 so we can continue to enjoy their hospitality. Having said that, the fish on Eagle Lake eat rapalas like candy.

  10. Charles/Andy...You boys are starting to escalate your posts to an aggressive level. That's how misunderstandings occur and people get their feelings hurt. I need only to remind you both of last year's big blow-up on this very blog. I seem to recall how name-calling, denials and threats led to "walk-outs" and the near shutdown of the Electric Beaver. We must learn from our mistakes.

  11. Professor,

You are showing way too much of your feminine side. I have a solution. Let's go fishing. Charles you are invited! Meet us at the Oconto International Airport at noon for some heavy duty lip ripping. Fair warning however. My brother little Richard will be joining us.

Fishing report to follow as we pretend to be on Eagle Lake.

  12. The Electric Beaver is like a sandbox in which we all get to play. The topic is Eagle Lake, fishing tips, fishing on Eagle Lake, VBL, or other items that would interest VBL or Eagle Lake guests. I'm not sure but lately I may have found some cat poop in the sandbox..........
